The Builder
of the Year for 2008 is awarded to Dan Cameron.
Getting into the construction business was a
“natural” for Dan, who helped his father with home
improvement projects as a young boy. His wife Pam’s
father was also a builder/developer. To get started,
he worked eight hours a day at Eli Lilly and six
hours a day for a builder. Later he managed a crew
in Daytona for two years before returning to Hancock
County to found his company in 1978. Today, the
company has many repeat customers, including
families for whom it has built three houses.
After 35 years the company’s focus remains the same:
To do the best job we know how to do. “Our attention
to detail hasn’t changed,” Dan says. “Our onsite
participation has never changed. I am a builder, not
a contractor. Not only will I be supervising the
job, I’ll sometimes be working on the job along with
my men, one of whom has been with me for 30 years.”
Dan keeps up on the latest technological advances
and consumer products. “You try to keep your finger
on the pulse and sort out the good from the not so
good,” he says.
Dan Cameron Builder Inc. does some remodeling but
specializes in building custom homes, typically
three to five per year, ranging from $150,000 to
more than a million dollars. Currently the company
has a spec home in The Overlook in New Palestine.
Its homes have won several awards in the Parade of
Dream Homes, including Best of Show and Best
Kitchen.
Dan accepts the award from council president
Monte Howell, the 2007 award winner. |
